Therapy for Therapists

Being a therapist (or a social worker, counselor, or any other helping professional) and being a human are intertwined, but some stressors are specific to being  a helping professional, and at times, the clinical things we struggle with are the result of personal "stuff". The majority of us didn't become helpers by accident.

"It's so nice to just be me... not professional me"

"I have had therapists skip parts of a protocol because they think I don't need it (because I'm a therapist); or treat me like a colleague; or who seem intimidated or say they are; or who otherwise just can't treat me like a client."

"I had a therapist ask me for peer consultation at the end of a session"

"I once had a therapist ask me how I was working an billing insurance as an associate because she wanted to take on associates but couldn't figure out how"

"I had 2 therapists tell me they were uncomfortable seeing me as a client because I am also a therapist"

"I've had trouble hearing back from and finding my own therapist when i dislose I am also a therapist"

"One con was my therapist right off the bat started treating me like a colleague, complaining about his EHR and caseload, asking me questions about mine in an unhepful way... Overall, I felt uncomfortable with him and switched after 3 sessions."
